Slow Global Warming

Chart of the Saturn opposition Uranus on April 26, 2010 The chart of the Saturn opposition to Uranus on April 26, 2010 at 7:27 PM in Washington, DC.  Under the influence of this chart (which is in effect until the next and last Saturn-Uranus opposition on July 26 - see below), the Federal government and the Federal Reserve will be confronting another banking/economic crisis but this chart has Saturn in the 11th house.  This house represents Congress, which is very unpopular with the electorate and running for re-election in the fall so, with Saturn in the 11th house, Congress is likely to be fearful of public backlash if they pass another huge bailout package for the irresponsible big banks who have continued to trade in high risk credit default swaps and derivatives.

Chart of the Saturn conjunction with Uranus on October 18, 1988 Chart of the Saturn conjunction with Uranus on October 18, 1988 at 9:28 AM in Washington, DC.  This conjunction began the current Saturn-Uranus cycle in which the Saturn-Uranus opposition of 2008-2011 marks the culmination or half-way point of the cycle.  Note the position of the conjunction in the 2nd house, which represents the nation's wealth, resources, income, and budget.  This chart portended the economic upheaval that we are now experiencing.  The Saturn-Uranus opposition underway is in the 10th and 4th houses of this chart - Saturn is transiting the 10th house and transiting Uranus is in the 4th house.  The 10th house in a mundane chart like this represents the executive branch of government and the corporate interests that presently control this country.  Transiting Saturn in the 10th house means that the presidency is fearful of alienating or significantly weakening corporate vested interests and these forces stand in opposition to meaningful changes that would benefit the general population (Uranus).
Yes, the most beautiful planet (in close-up photos) and the biggest astrological trouble-maker – Saturn – is again in opposition to Uranus – the planet that symbolizes unexpected change, chaos, disruption, and the inexplicable.  This opposition began in September 2008 – coincident with the onset of the worldwide financial meltdown – and it continued until October 29, 2009, when Saturn entered the sign of Libra.  This article recaps the events that have happened under its influence and, since the past repeats itself, it will give us an idea of what to expect when it returns from April 7 – May 27, 2010, from July 21 – August 13, 2010, and from May through mid-August 2011.

First and probably foremost, the Saturn opposition to Uranus represents the breakdown (Uranus) of the financial “system” (Saturn) that is largely based upon greed (Saturn).  Big, U.S.-based, multi-national banks began failing (Saturn) in September 2008, concurrent with the onset of this planetary opposition, although most of them obtained a temporary reprieve from the flailing, inept, lame-duck Bush regime.  Housing prices continued their decline (Saturn), which began in 2007, and sub-prime mortgages reset with much higher payments en masse, which caused an avalanche of defaults (Saturn).  The economic fallout extended to the American auto industry and other big corporate employers as frightened (Saturn) consumers cut their spending (Saturn) and increased their savings.  Many states plunged into dire fiscal insolvency (Saturn), with California forced to sell off some of its assets.  As further evidence of the decay of the inhumane system of capitalism, the unemployment rate continued to climb (until recently) and tens or hundreds of millions of Americans are presently over-worked, underpaid, underemployed, working in so-called “survival jobs,” or vainly applying for jobs with hundreds of other applicants.  Although the stock markets and big Wall Street “investment” banks (the 21st century robber-barons) appear to have recovered somewhat since their more than 50% loss from September 2008 – March 2009, the Saturn-Uranus opposition is historically indicative of big stock market declines and deep recessions or depressions.  All of the above are examples of extremes (Uranus), in one way or another, and they represent the great divide in this country and in the world (represented by this planetary opposition) between those controlling the wealth who want to maintain their power base (more than 70% of the wealth is owned by 10% of the population) versus or opposed by those who want a more equitable and humane redistribution of wealth and resources (Uranus).  Yes, every social program is a redistribution of wealth so this is a humanitarian (Uranus), not just a socialist concept, although the wealthy, vested interests (Saturn) abhor it.

Is there anything good about the Saturn-Uranus opposition?  Yes – the changes that the vast majority of disenfranchised people will eventually demand when we become desperate enough.  An example is the millions of phone calls to Congressional politicians (they are the representatives of the wealthy, of course) received from irate Americans when the $700,000,000,000 Bush bailout for the Wall Street banks was first proposed in the fall of 2008.  So many calls against the bailout were made that the U.S. House voted against it.  But then the robber barons (Saturn) of Goldman Sachs (Henry Paulson, Secretary of the Treasury at the time, was the former Chairman and CEO of Goldman – how convenient for the big banks!), J.P. Morgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup, and “too big to fail” AIG, Fanny Mae, and Freddy Mac made their phone calls to Bush, Paulson, Obama, and Congress.  Despite the public outcry, the robber barons had their way and average Americans (via the U.S. tax code) were on the hook for an unprecedented, deficit busting, debt exploding bailout of Wall Street fat cats who had screwed up!  Then President Obama added insult to injury by pushing a $787,000,000,000 “economic stimulus package” through Congress that further added to the U.S. debt and deficit and that would be used for bailouts of bankrupt companies like General Motors and Chrysler.  To give credit where credit is due, this measure has put a lot of low-skilled laborers and contractual employees temporarily back to work (though without benefits) on road construction and bridge-building projects but it hasn’t helped most Americans who are unemployed, underemployed, or in “survival jobs” one iota!  All of the above happened while Saturn was in opposition to Uranus.  Unfortunately, forces represented by Saturn (the status quo, the entrenched robber barons, the vested interests) have won so far but the Uranus-Pluto square is the harbinger of changes FORCED upon the current U.S. plutocracy by the masses of disenfranchised, disgruntled, overworked, underemployed, and underpaid Americans, like you and me.  Although the Uranus square Pluto transit begins this year (from May 27 through August 13, 2010 – so it is present in the middle two charts on the left), it really doesn't continue uninterupted and in ernest until March 11, 2011, this square doesn't reach its first peak (when it is exact the first time) until June 24, 2012, and it continues (on and off) through 2018.

Congressional politicians (Saturn) are scared (Saturn) of the electorate, but not scared enough.  I was recently questioned, in a phone survey paid for by “blue-dog” Congressman Allen Boyd (who represents the vested interests in the Congressional district in which I live), how I felt about him (I said very negative), about his vote against the Obama-backed “health care reform bill” in November 2009 (I called Boyd’s office beforehand to tell his staff that I would vote against him if he voted against this legislation – and he did vote against it), and whether my low opinion of him might change if he votes FOR the watered-down legislation now before Congress.  Of course, I could NEVER speak directly to Congressman Boyd (or any other member of Congress) because I haven’t made a large contribution to his re-election campaigns and I am not on the board of directors, or an officer, or a lobbyist of a Fortune 500 company (the only way I MIGHT be allowed to speak with him is if I say how wonderful he is during the screening conversation with the staff member before they let me speak with him).  Though some politicians are running scared, it will take MILLIONS of protesting Americans to outweigh the influence of big, corporate, political campaign contributors, whom today’s politicians REALLY REPRESENT, before meaningful changes that benefit most of us occur.

On the personal level, notice any intolerance you have toward those who are different than you (Saturn opposition Uranus) and focus your attention on making progressive changes (Uranus) in your life that will help you cope with the evils of capitalism (Saturn).  Also, don’t let distractions (Uranus) take too much time (Saturn) away from (the opposition) your personal growth.  These times are testing most of us to work on our own issues (Saturn), but in creative ways (Uranus).
