SATURN OPPOSITE URANUS - OLD vs. NEW

by Gary Brand - written October 10, 2008,
published in the November 2008 edition of Echo* newspaper
What a Uranus-Saturn opposition looks like This is what Saturn opposite Uranus looks like, with Earth between the two (from left to right, the planets shown are Uranus, Earth and Saturn).  Another way of thinking about a planetary opposition like this is that shortly after one planet sets in the west, the opposite planet rises in the east.  The photos of these three planets are to scale as far as size is concerned but are not to scale in terms of distances from each other.  Images are courtesy of NASA.
am angry, and I am not alone, but I am also very happy!  I am angry because, after working and paying taxes all of my life, I can’t get any help from our government but AIG (a global insurance conglomerate) can because it’s “too big to fail” – what a joke – on us the taxpayers!  Two years ago when my wife was in the hospital for three weeks with life-threatening pneumonia, we couldn’t get a government bailout to pay our hospital or doctor bills.  But the rich in this plutocracy always get bailed out.  While our government was bailing out AIG to the tune of over $120,000,000,000 in early October 2008, their executives and top sales staff were living it up for a week at an expensive spa, which cost $410,000 (according to NBC Nightly News), more than many Americans will earn in their entire lives!  How ludicrous!  These huge, global, corporate monstrosities deserve to crumble into oblivion.  This pathetically desperate, doomed to fail, but immensely costly $700,000,000,000 (yes, 11 zeros) bailout that, together with the Bush war against Iraq, your children and grandchildren will be paying for the rest of their lives, merely postpones the sinking (like the Titanic) of the global, corporate-run plutocracy and I say good riddance!  To put this $700,000,000,000 bailout in perspective, one second isn’t a long time, is it?  Comparatively, $1 won’t buy a gallon of gasoline, will it?  Even 1,000 seconds is less than 17 minutes and 1,000,000 seconds is only 11.6 days.  The average person won’t live more than 2,400,000,000 seconds but 700,000,000,000 seconds is 22,181 YEARS – much longer than all of recorded history!  By analogy, $700,000,000,000 is an incomprehensible amount of money!

Why am I very happy at the same time?  Because the top-heavy (referring to the fat-cats) economic system that global corporations have constructed without governmental restraints is rapidly failing.  Several years ago, I predicted this demise (see the Twilight of the Oil Age articles) but I am somewhat surprised that the entire system is crumbling so quickly.  The powerful few who rule this world from their corporate boardrooms have their backs turned upon the balance of humanity and the future.  Instead, they face the past, longing to create or simply maintain empires that rival or surpass the glorious, ill-conceived, and ill-fated empires of their forefathers.  It is unfortunate that so many hard-working, good people will suffer in the coming economic Depression (which I portended) but there is light at the end of this long, downward-spiraling, economic tunnel.  Hope resides in the changes (like the election of Barack Obama) portended by the planets, beginning with Saturn opposite Uranus.

As promised, the balance of this article is about the Saturn opposite Uranus transit that began concurrent with this economic meltdown.  On average, this opposition occurs every 45 years and lasts, on and off, for about two years so it will continue through 10 months of 2009 and half of 2010.  The last Saturn opposite Uranus transit during 1965-1966 signified much tumult and upheaval – massive escalation of the unpopular (Saturn) Vietnam War concurrent with massive demonstrations against it (Uranus) in the U.S. and in Vietnam, many coups in Africa (Uranus), relentless civil rights demonstrations (Uranus) orchestrated by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X was assassinated, and rioting occurred in Los Angeles (assassinations and riots are manifestations of Saturn - the old order in opposition to Uranus - the radical departure or overturning force).  The protesting was not in vain because the Voting Rights Act and Medicare and Medicaid were signed into law.  Because of his unpopular (Saturn) escalation of the Vietnam war, Johnson was dissuaded (Saturn) from running for another term as president.

The previous Saturn opposite Uranus transit was during 1917-1919.  World War I was another unpopular war in the U.S. (President Wilson won his 2nd term on an anti-war platform) and it produced terrible atrocities, including the use of chemical weapons.  Other challenges during this opposition included the flu pandemic that killed 20,000,000 people worldwide and more than 500,000 in the U.S., prohibition of alcohol became law, demonstrations by women for the right to vote, the first general strike in U.S. history, Gandhi led protests in India, and the U.S. government took control of the railroads and Wells Fargo and shut down breweries during WWI.  However, out of this chaos came the League of Nations, chemical warfare was banned, women finally obtained the right to vote, and many European countries gained their independence.  The previous Saturn-Uranus opposition in 1873-1875 had similar effects (the war of that period was against Native Americans), including the crash of Stock Exchanges in New York and Vienna that triggered the financial panic of 1873 in the U.S. and heralded the depression of 1873-1879.

What does Saturn opposite Uranus mean?  The forces represented by Saturn are in a confrontation with and opposed by the forces represented by Uranus, with those who are indifferent or powerless in the center of this planetary tug-of-war.  Examples of the polarities that a Saturn opposite Uranus transit represents:  the past vs. the present and future; those who fear and resist change vs. those who demand change; conservatives vs. liberals; Republicans vs. Democrats; selfishness and greed vs. humanitarianism and equality; corporate executive pay vs. average worker pay; wealthy, vested interests vs. the public interest; “Wall Street” vs. “Main Street”; the status quo vs. change; McCain vs. Obama; accumulation of wealth vs. redistribution of wealth; control vs. unexpected outcomes, etc.  These two very divergent forces of nature are pulling on each of us and upon our world.  They will pull some of our constructs apart but this epic struggle seems to historically be a crisis period during and after which positive reforms occur.

What can you do to weather this storm?  Pull all of your money out of large banks and put it in local, small, fiscally sound banks or credit unions.  Have no assets invested in the stock market – we won’t see the bottom for 2-5 years, despite what the pundits are saying.  Have several months supply of food on hand.  Don’t buy real estate unless you intend to keep it for 12+ years.  Invest your money in something with intrinsic value recognized by everyone, like Gold, Platinum, or Silver.  Look for and create multiple ways to generate money in the local economy – discover what people want and supply it.
