Slow Global Warming

by Gary Brand - written February 6, 2002,
published in the March 2002 edition of Echo* newspaper
“Astrology is astronomy brought to earth and applied to the affairs of men [and women]” - Ralph Waldo Emerson (N.D., p. x (1980)).

ntil 1752, the beginning of the year was March 25 in England and the American colonies, and this date is, on average, five days after the spring equinox.  This made much more sense than January 1, which has no astrological or astronomical significance.  The spring or vernal equinox is one of only two days during the year when day and night are each 12 hours in length everywhere on the planet!  Hence, the use of the "equi-" root (equal day and night).  In tropical astrology, the vernal equinox is a very significant event because it defines the beginning of the sign of Aries and, therefore, the beginning of the zodiac.  Many astronomers mistakenly equate the tropical zodiacal sign of Aries with the group of stars referred to as the constellation of Aries.

How does the sign of Aries correlate with the events of spring (the following italicized words are Aries keywords, words connected in meaning with the sign)?  Aries is symbolized by the ram and rams ram heads in the spring as a mating ritual.  Although it gives me a headache just thinking about it, this ritual is very active and represents the mating energy that is apparent everywhere in nature in the spring.  New growth emerges as trees bud new leaves, many with a red hue like the red planet Mars, ruler of Aries. Even the bright greens of emerging new leaves are emblematic of renewal.  Expressions like "get your blood moving" and "begin anew" and "full of energy" all befit spring and Aries.  Also, the rapid lengthening of the days at this time of year, more so than at any other time, is thought to trigger the glorious renewal of nature as enumerated above.

Brilliant minds and ideas are in evidence March 6 - 11 when Mercury conjoins Uranus.  Let your mind run free, do things in spurts and present new ideas.  Although Mars is debilitated in the sign of Taurus March 1 - April 13, the Sun signs of Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn benefit from his energy while Scorpio, Leo and Aquarius are challenged to not battle others.  When Mars sextiles Jupiter March 4 - 13 it is a great time for starting anything, especially activities related to Taurus (gardening, arts, money, practicalities) or Cancer (home, family, breeding, building).  This is also a fortunate time of good outcomes and effectiveness.

A very active period is from March 10 - 23 when Venus and Mercury both make three aspects to other planets and Mars makes one. Mercury trine Jupiter benefits learning, reading, writing, and travel but Mercury square Saturn brings serious concerns to mind and critical problem solving.  Keep criticisms to yourself.  Venus square Jupiter and sextile Neptune are romantic, indulgent, indolent, and idealistic.  A romantic, candle-lit dinner is good but don't over-indulge and DON'T START DIETING then!  Mars square Neptune may bring illness or allergy flare-ups if you over-extend, sleep not enough, or feel discouraged.  Confront your fears, not people, and look to your night dreams for answers.

The month ends well as Sun sextiles Saturn and Neptune March 27 - April 3, thus activating the Saturn-Neptune trine.  This is a great time to work toward envisioned goals/dreams, to help others, volunteer, and seek advice/inspiration.
